And so so something I relate to

"The repercussions for writing this are more than I can deal with right now, or There's too great a chance for misrepresentation or misunderstanding if I write this in this way"

That's perfect. Exactly how I feel. Even the more staid material I produce I don't show my parents. There are things I am burning to write, but the risk of being misinterpreted, potentially losing my job, being arrested, who knows what - many artists say nothing will compromise their art. I think about Marcus Harvey, the artist behind the portrait of Myra Hindley at Sensation, and the risks he faced as the result of not pulling his punches, and the fact I'm not willing to subject me and my friends and family to that for my art - I don't know if that makes me feel pleased with myself for having my priorities straight, or disgusted with myself for having them wrongDan Hollowayhttp://danholloway.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-43905348168571177.post-55617563058800185882011-09-24T20:36:12.126+10:002011-09-24T20:36:12.126+10:00I've found this a bit when I work on YA. Even ...I've found this a bit when I work on YA. Even though my protagonists in my work in progress are older, in their late teens, people have told me I can't have sex in the book, or too much swearing. My answer is, "Have you ever BEEN around 18 year olds?" :-)

My book, Cage Life, also has a short story that deals with drug use, and I had some criticism that I'd turn some readers off because of the drug use, even though the message is actually anti-drugs if one reads the entire story. I suppose you can't please everyone.Write with youhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18345608471844699382noreply@blogger.com
